The Captain's Job
The captain of an airplane has a big job. The captain has to make sure that the plane is safe. The captain needs to be able to make good decisions. There could be a problem before the plane takes off. The captain checks everything to be sure it is ready. The captain needs to decide if it is safe to fly. Then the captain has to figure out what to do if there is a problem while flying.
In January, 2009, the captain of a plane took off in New York. That’s a very busy city. As the plane rose, it ran into some birds. The birds got caught in the engines. Both engines stopped. The captain had to figure out how to save the plane. There would not be time to go back to the airport.
He saw a river, the Hudson River. It’s a big river. But there were boats on it. And the water was cold. Still, he knew that would be the safest place to land. He told the passengers to get ready for a hard landing. He wanted to be sure they got to safety.
In the cabin, the passengers were scared. The airline workers told them to do their best. They said to put their heads down and hold on tight. Passengers did that. They looked at each other. Family members held hands. They told each other how they felt.
Then the plane hit the water. It was a jolt. Then water started coming into the plane. But they helped each other. The airline workers helped them get out. When everyone was safe, the captain left, too.
They were standing on the wings of the plane as it floated in the water. It was sinking. But boats came to get them. There were firemen on the boats. There were police officers, too. The people on the boats said they were lucky to have such a good captain.
He said, “It is not about me. We all did it together. In fact, you’re the heroes.” Everyone was grateful to the captain, even though he said that.

After reading the article below titled "What is a Fable?" write a summary in the Google Doc below.
What is a Fable?
A fable is a story. A wise author would write the fable to tell a lesson. Long ago, people wrote many fables. They wrote them to help other people learn. For example, the tortoise and the hare is a fable. That fable tells people it is not wise to show off. It is wise to work hard.
Most fables have animals in them. The animals talk. Of course in real life an animal can’t talk. But in the fables they do. The animals often do foolish things. For example, in one fable there is a crow. It wants to get a delicious fruit. It takes it from a garden. And it gets it. But then as the crow soars it shows off. It opens its mouth to shout, “Look, I got the best fruit.” But of course the crow loses the fruit. It falls out of its mouth because it opened its mouth to shout.
Fables have a moral. A moral is the lesson it teaches. The fable about the crow makes an important point. It tells you that people should be careful. It tells you that the crow was foolish.
There is another fable about the ant and the grasshopper. The grasshopper played all summer while the ant toiled. The ant got ready for winter. The ant was a hard worker. It dug a hole to stay in during winter. It carried food to that hole. When winter came, the ant was able to live. The grasshopper did not have any food. It had no place to stay. Winter was a great challenge for the grasshopper. It asked the ant for help. The ant was generous. The ant did help the grasshopper. The grasshopper learned a lesson. So did everyone who read the fable.

After reading the article below titled "A New Park," write a summary in the Google Doc below.
A New Park
A school in Chicago was not near a park. There was no place for children to play in the community. To get to a park, you had to take a bus. The school was a very big school with two buildings. There was a lot of land outside the school. It took up a whole block.
It used to be a park. But the land had been covered in concrete. Part of it was a parking lot. Part of it was an old playground. When they built the school, it was just one building. But then more people moved into the community and they needed a bigger school. So they paved the ground and built another building.
The principal met with the alderman. The alderman works in the city government. Each part of the city has an alderman. The principal asked the alderman to help. She said that they had an old playground. She showed pictures of the playground. The equipment was old. They needed much more.
The alderman had a big idea. “Let’s turn your school into a park,” she said. “You have lots of land outside the school. Right now it is concrete. We can put in grass and trees. We can rebuild the playground.”
To make that change, the alderman had to get money. It would be expensive to make the park. The alderman talked with the Chicago Park District. That is the organization that runs all the parks. They wanted to add a park near the school. The wanted to make sure every community had a park they could walk to. They liked the idea of putting it right outside the school.
It took two years to make this big change. First, designers made plans. Then the Park District made a budget. They made a schedule. First they would have to get rid of the concrete. Then they would need good soil, grass, and trees.
They needed money to pay for the work and equipment. The alderman helped them get money. He persuaded the City Council to pay for the new park. The City Council is in charge of the city’s laws. It oversees the budget, too. The alderman helped them understand that this park would be well used every day.
It took two years, but the park was built. Everyone loved the park. Now on Saturdays and Sundays children come to play in the park
There was a big celebration when they opened it. Parents came. So did the alderman. So did the principals of other schools in the community. The other principals said they wanted to have parks, too.

After reading the article below titled "Native American Life," write a summary in the Google Doc below.
Native American Life
The name Potawatomi means People of the Place of the Fire or Keepers of the Fire. Long ago, they got this name because they were responsible for the fire for a group of tribes. They moved into this area a few hundred years ago. They lived here for many decades. As the seasons changed, the Potawatomi changed their ways of living. In summer they moved to one big village. In winter, they set up small camps. Imagine their homes as you read about their lives in the different seasons. The following paragraphs describe a year that might have been usual for a Potawatomi family in this area a couple hundred years ago.
Summer We’re moving to the big village. We will set up a big house. We will use long poles to make it. It will have a big floor and bigger roof. The roof will hang over the cooking area. I will help my mother plant. First we will dig in the ground with a big shoulder bone from a deer. It’s hard work to do that digging. But then we’ll have a lot of food. It will be a great time for everyone when we get together with our friends and big family. My sister says summer is her favorite time because there are so many things to see and do. My mother likes it, too. She likes to be with our big family in summer. There is much work to do, but everyone helps.
Autumn. We have a lot of food. The squash and pumpkins are big. We have lots of corn, too. Every day, I pick more beans. We’re drying the big pumpkins to save for the winter. My father got salt from a salt spring that we’re using to save the meat. Soon we will be moving to our winter camp. I go to get nuts and berries. I eat some when I find them, but I bring most of them home.
Winter We have set up a wigwam in a place near the trees. We saw deer and raccoons and knew this would be a good place for hunting. We made the wigwam from branches of trees. We stuck one end in the ground. Then we tied them together in the middle. We left a hole for the smoke from the fire to get out. We covered the outside of the wigwam with bark..
It’s a cold winter day, and it just snowed. My father says it’s a good day to hunt the elk. He will be able to see the tracks in the snow. He will go soon to hunt. My mother says that means lots of food and work. If we don’t have enough food in this place, we may move our camp. We will look for a place where we will find more animal tracks.
Spring We are getting my favorite food. We get it by making a hole in a tree. Out comes the sweet juice of the tree. My father is going fishing. He has a net he made from deer sinew. He throws it in the stream and then it sinks down. He tied shells to the bottom of the net. They fill with water and then go to the bottom of the stream. This summer, my brother will get to fish, too. He has a line and hook he will use to catch the fish in the lake. We sometimes get fish in winter, but that means we have to cut through the ice to get them. So fishing is a spring and summer job. My father likes the spring best. He says it is a time of hope. He hears the birds sing and sees the plants start to grow again. I like spring, too. Soon we will see the flowers.

Animal Studies
Animals are wonderful. If you look closely at how they live you will find many surprises. It is hard to look closely at insects. They are very small. Many of them fly away when you come near. But if you have a chance to watch them you will find how they live. Watching animals is a job that scientists do. It is called making observations. They have learned a lot about animals.
Scientist learned about tiny animals. They have studied insects. They found that insects have tools. They use those tools to live. They learned about the sawfly. This is just one animal they have studied.
Imagine what the sawfly is like. It is a fly but not like many others. They call it the sawfly because it has a kind of saw. It's not a real saw. But it looks like one. And it works like one. It is part of the sawfly. The sawfly uses the saw to make places where the eggs will be safe. It saws at plants. So it makes a place where the eggs can go. Then the sawfly does something very special It makes a sort of homemade glue that fastens them where they are laid. We are not sure how it does that. But if you can watch the sawfly you will see this happen.
Some insects have cutting instruments that work just like scissors. The poppy-bee is one of them. It is a bee that makes it home in wood. This bee has a boring tool, too. It uses the tool to bore into old wood. It looks like a tool that a carpenter uses. Carpenters make things out of wood. The poppy-bee makes its nest out of wood.
Scientists observe birds, too. They have seen birds use their bills to get what they need. Some birds use their bills to cut into wood. They have sharp bills. They can cut a hole in a tree. They drill the hole to get inside the tree where insects live. Then they eat them.
Every animal is amazing. Even dogs and cats can surprise you. The more you look at animals the more you will learn. Nature is full of surprises. Every part of every animal has a purpose. Scientists learn more about them ever day. Nature is a wonderful part of our world. Scientists have studied nature and written books. They help us know more.
